Rowing update - 2016-2017 season so far
Brit Champs was the first event of the new season for us, and was another strong indication of the strength and depth of the squad - the top 3 men’s crews came 2nd, 4th and 5th, with the 2nd VIII claiming the student pennant and a new student record of 5:48. The women’s 1st VIII came 5th in a very strong field.
Wallingford Head was the last race of 2016 before the new year, and it didn’t disappoint - we came away with 113 tankards (the most wins at this event ever), winning 17 of the 19 categories entered.
Following this was the second GB U23 and Senior Trials, where alums Peter Chambers and Matthew Tarrant won the LM1x and M2- boat classes respectively.
Since then, Brookes have raced against both Oxford & Cambridge on the tideway:
The first fixture was against strong Cambridge squad, the 2nd VIII won their races against Goldie convincingly, with the 1st VIII drawing on the first piece, then storming away to a 3-length victory over the Blue Boat in the second piece.
The second fixture against our neighbours Oxford was in blustery conditions. OUBC took early leads in both pieces and despite a late surge from Brookes in the first piece the win was to the dark blues. In the second piece once again OUBC took an early lead, but Brookes fought back, pushing the boat race favourites to the line, the final verdict was a seat to OUBC.
Next race for Brookes is Reading University Head.
