HRR 2014 - Other HRR news

The Prince Albert was comfortably won by Newcastle University, who had put our boys out on the Saturday. Newcastle beat Harvard by 3 1/2 lengths, time 7.21 compared to 2 lengths over Brookes on the Saturday in a time of 7.17. I'll leave you to do the maths on that - but I think we all know when that final was really raced...

Congratulations and commiserations to ALL Brookes athletes - Thanks for a great Henley 2014

Taurus and Brookes members were also seen at the prize giving in both premier VIII's events - Zoe de Toledo coxed the Leander and IC Women's VIII to a fine 2/3 length win over Hollandia Roieclub in the Remenham and Matt Tarrant sitting at 7 in the Leander and UL beating the French by 1 1/2 lengths.

In the end a well balanced regatta saw plenty of home and foreign wins with some great club wins, notably UTRC picking up the Wyfold and Brit and Gloucester, with composite crews on both sides of the Princess Grace W4x final and Diamond Jubilee (JW4x) The most exciting but ultimately gut wrenching result had to be the final of the Wyfold between Upper Thames and Tideway Scullers. The crews had level pegged most of the way up the course with a few steering warnings. Scullers had a few feet into the enclosures on the unfavoured station but UTRC seemed to get their nose ahead by the progress board when the crews clashed and the race was stopped. Scullers were DQ'd and the win went to UTRC. Very subdued applause from the crowds.

Right - back to work everyone....!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - BROOKES WIN TEMPLE!

Brookes A lead from start to finish with a commanding 2 3/4 length verdict over Brown University, with a time of 6.29.

Congratulations to Richard, Henry and all the boys! Great to see you staying on the Temple "Previous Winners" page!

First man over the line (humour me) was in fact Pete Lowe, long serving Taurus Chairman and club treasure, who had the night before had the new VIII named after him in an emotional ceremony in the boat tents. Well done Pete - but stop crying now!

HRR 2014 - SATURDAY UPDATE AND SUNDAY RACING

ajgandon@yahoo.comComment

Saturday racing saw Brookes A continue through to Sunday in the Temple with a great I/2 length win from the unfavoured Bucks station over Cornell A in a time of 6.25. Clearly a tough and fast race but Brookes looked in control coming past the enclosures. On the other side of the Temple draw Brown University overhauled the Dutch Nereus crew by 2 lengths in a time of 6.40.

Sadly the Prince Albert IV went out to a strong looking Newcastle University crew by 2 lengths, time 7.17 and Scott Durant's Goblets pair were unsuccessful also, going down to the Dutch by 1 3/4 lengths - a close verdict for the Goblets.

Todays Temple final goes off at 12.10 with Brookes on Berks facing Brown on Bucks.

You know where you need to be!

Good luck Boys.

HRR 2014 - THURSDAY RACING ROUND-UP

ajgandon@yahoo.comComment

A great day for spectating but a tough day on the river with a strong headwind all day. A mixed day for Brookes with the Visitors IV and Prince of Wales 4x going out, along with Brookes C in the Temple against Brookes A with an unfortunate draw. However the day was rounded off nicely with a strong looking win for Brookes in the Prince Albert over University of Michigan.

FRIDAY BROOKES RACES 11.05, Temple, Brookes A vs Durham A 3.20, Ladies Plate, Brookes/Taurus vs Brown University No Prince Albert races until Saturday

HRR 2014 - MID MORNING ROUND-UP

ajgandon@yahoo.comComment

Brookes A went head to head with Brookes C in the Temple (special thanks to the Stewards Draw Department) with a verdict of 3/4" length to the A crew in a time around 30 seconds slower than yesterdays races. No team orders there then! Commiserations to the C crew.

Brookes B went out yesterday to the seeded University of Michigan crew in the fastest Temple race of the day.

The Brookes men's quad went out to London in the Prince of Wales, losing by 2 1/4 lengths - having lead to the Barrier.

Taurus Temple VIII appeal - final progress report

Ryan DaviesComment

We are delighted to announce that the recent appeal for funds to purchase a boat for the Temple VIII crew is now officially closed, after successfully raising £4,300 from individual member donations, including several particularly generous donations.

With the addition of the £5000 Taurus have already donated from club general funds, and another £2500 pledged from the Taurus Sponsorship account (more on this account below), it means Taurus has raised a total of £11,800 - just £200 short of our £12,000 target. This is excellent news for which we would like to thank all members - because even if you have not directly donated on this occasion, the majority of your membership subs over recent years have gone towards the club donation of £5000.

The success of our appeal and of several fundraising efforts by the students themselves has in fact unlocked more money from Brookes itself, which has, in conjunction with the sale of an older Empacher, now allowed Richard and Henry to order another Empacher VIII - this time brand new (in addition to the ex-Olympic Empacher already delivered, racing and winning).

As a committee, we are happy to support the diversion of some of the donated funds to allow the purchase of this new VIII and hope all Taurus members will be proud to be behind it also.

It really is looking like a very strong year for Brookes, with excellent results at the University Champs at Nottingham, Gent and Duisberg regattas . The first VIII will be using the new Empacher in the Temple and the second VIII, who came a close second place at Gent, will be in the ex-Olympic Empacher also in the Temple.

Henley is now only 5 weeks away and I look forward to a successful campaign vocally supported from the enclosures as ever!

The current appeal is now closed, however if you still wish to donate then that would be gratefully received but could I now perhaps ask all members to consider setting up a separate standing order directly to our dedicated fundraising account - the Sponsorship Account for future Brookes donations. This is an account we use specifically for fundraising - all funds are ring-fenced and kept separate from general club funds. 100% of donations go to support Brookes. We have never publicised or promoted this account but even with a handful of subscribers making modest donations of £20 - £50 annually we have made several donations over the years, including the £2,500 mentioned above.

Any level of donation is welcome - but we would suggest an annual donation of between £20 - £50 to keep it affordable.

To set up a standing order please follow this link to the fundraising page and follow instructions there - http://www.taurusboatclub.org.uk/fundraising/

Richard Sprately has asked me to pass on his words also:

"Please could you send my warmest thanks to every single donor for the significant help they have given towards the Temple crew this year achieving their goal.  I will do all I can to ensure that these athletes are provided with every means to achieve their goals and these donations have been a key part of this."

Finally - on behalf of the Taurus committee, thank you to all those that have donated either through membership subscriptions, sponsorship account donations, individual donations or all three.  We don't ask for your money lightly and will always ensure that it is properly looked after and used for the best results from Brookes rowing.

See you at Henley!
